Using Google to help with bullion weight confusion

Posted by A.B. Dada on May 18th, 2006

Troy ounces, grains, grams, carats, it all gets confusing. Even I get lost sometimes when I have to deal with all those various weights and can’t figure anything out. My digital scale converts between all 4 instantly, so I don’t worry so much when I am weighing, but when I make purchases online or try to track down what a various weight is in troy ounces, the weight conversion charts are easy to confuse.

I use Google’s search tool to calculate what a weight is in other measurements. While this feature is well known by most, I meet enough gold and silver bugs who never realized it is there and it is faster than a calculator.

Google’s search tool lets you convert any one measurement to another very quickly. For example, a Pre-1983 1 cent coin weighs about 3.11 grams total. How many grains is that?

Typing 3.11 grams to grains into Google search gets you the answer instantly — 47.99 grains!

How about troy ounces?

Just type 3.11 grams to troy ounces into Google search and there’s the answer — 0.0999888218 troy ounces.

It is easy, it is fast, and I use it every day. If you get easily confused by all the various bullion weights, here is a great way to get a good idea of what it weighs versus something you know.
